A close cousin of Thankfulness is Remembrance. How can we be grateful of that for which we do not remember? The call to remember is often attached to times of great suffering or sacrifice that led to breakthrough and victory. Two weeks ago we celebrated Veterans Day, a commemorative initiated as Armistice Day ending WWI, then renamed Veterans Day after WWII, ending a terrible war, genocide of the Jews and unimaginable loss of life. Without these days, in one generation we can easily forget. In like manner, God wisely has commanded His people to remember His acts, so that the coming generations will know what He has done and live with a sense of gratitude for the blessings they enjoy instead of entitlement.
